Network Protocols
Learn how devices communicate using network protocols.
Task 1: Introduction
Welcome to your journey into network protocols! In your previous learning, you've discovered how networks are built with devices and cables, and how IP addresses, DHCP, DNS, and NAT help devices find and communicate with each other. Now, we'll explore the "rules of conversation" that make this communication possible.
Think of network protocols as the languages and etiquette that devices use to talk to each other. Just like humans need shared rules for effective conversation, computers need protocols to send and receive data successfully.
Why Protocols Matter
Every time you browse a website, send an email, or stream a video, multiple network protocols are working together behind the scenes. Understanding these protocols helps you troubleshoot problems, secure your network, and appreciate how the internet actually works.
What You'll Learn in This Room
- Understand what network protocols are and why we need them
- Learn the difference between reliable TCP and fast UDP communication
- Discover common application protocols like HTTP, HTTPS, and SMTP
- See how protocols add information to data using headers
- Connect protocol knowledge to your existing network understanding
Prerequisites
Before starting, you should be familiar with:
- Basic network devices (routers, switches)
- IP addresses and how they identify devices
- DHCP for automatic IP assignment
- DNS for translating names to addresses
- NAT for sharing IP addresses
Important Note
You already know HOW devices connect and FIND each other (with IP, DHCP, DNS). Now you'll learn HOW they TALK to each other (with protocols).
Optional Video
This optional video covers the fundamental concepts of network protocols. It's helpful but not required to complete the room.
