NAT Basics
Understand how NAT connects private networks to the internet.
Task 1: Introduction
In this room, you'll learn about Network Address Translation (NAT), one of the most important technologies that makes modern internet connectivity possible. NAT is what allows multiple devices in your home or office to share a single internet connection.
Why NAT Matters
Every device needs an IP address to communicate on the internet, but there aren't enough unique IPv4 addresses for every device in the world. NAT solves this problem by allowing many private devices to share one public IP address. Without NAT, the internet as we know it wouldn't work!
What You'll Learn
In this room, you will:
- Understand what NAT is and why it was created
- Learn about private and public IP addresses
- Explore different types of NAT (Static, Dynamic, PAT)
- See how NAT is configured in real routers
- Discover how NAT affects network security
Prerequisites
Before starting, you should understand:
- Basic network concepts (from previous rooms)
- What IP addresses are
- How devices connect to networks
- Basic router functionality
Note
Some technical terms like "PAT," "translation tables," and "port forwarding" might be new. Don't worry about memorizing them now. We'll explore these concepts step by step throughout the room.
Optional Video
This optional video covers the fundamental concepts of NAT. It's helpful but not required to complete the room.
